面 - what is the base meaning?

All in traditional: I think of 麵 as the 麥 equivalent of 米's 飯; that is, the "processed" version of 麥 wheat as a grain.

Its semantic extension to the foodstuff is somewhat similar to what happened to the word pasta in the evolution of Italian language and Italian cuisine, etymologically connected to the English "paste", before becoming the foodstuff meaning, which is now its "default meaning" when presented without context.
