Duke of Crydee Posted August 17, 2005 at 12:45 AM Report Share Posted August 17, 2005 at 12:45 AM Hi. Years ago while dating my wife, we left the New York Museum of Natural History and there was an old asian man setup on the sidewalk doing people's names in calligraphy. We thought it looked really cool and got our names done. But now we have no idea who's is who because we reframed them and lost the markers who put on the old frame. Can anyone here read them and let me know which is which? Or at least tell us what they mean? For all I know, the guy wrote chinese curse words on them. http://www.blueharvestcds.com/chinese
markalexander100 Posted August 17, 2005 at 03:28 AM Report Share Posted August 17, 2005 at 03:28 AM I think 1: yue1 han4 2: qiu2 di4 (ignore the numbers if you don't want to worry about tones). They don't really mean anything, they're just phonetic (Johan and Jodie?)
Duke of Crydee Posted August 17, 2005 at 03:42 AM Author Report Share Posted August 17, 2005 at 03:42 AM Ding Ding Ding! Our names are John & Jodi. Looks like the guy just sounded out our names like you said. Makes me wonder though. Do characters exist for proper names like John & Jodi at all? Or are all proper names done in this way? in_lab Posted August 17, 2005 at 06:07 AM Report Share Posted August 17, 2005 at 06:07 AM The transliteration for John is standard. It's in the Bible, afterall. The transliteration of Jodi is not as standard. Dr. Eye gives another possiblity: 喬蒂 qiao2di4
