It should be something like nǚ + ..., isn't it? Thanks for your attention. BR//Raiyan
889 Posted May 27, 2018 at 04:54 PM Report Share Posted May 27, 2018 at 04:54 PM For 姐, 女 gives a hint to the meaning and 且 qie gives a hint to the pronunciation.
陳德聰 Posted May 27, 2018 at 05:04 PM Report Share Posted May 27, 2018 at 05:04 PM Chinese characters are not an alphabet. It is important to keep in mind that there are many different ways of composing characters, and it rarely ever looks like “pronunciation of part 1” + “pronunciation of part 2” = “pronunciation of the word.”
edelweis Posted May 27, 2018 at 07:52 PM Report Share Posted May 27, 2018 at 07:52 PM 9 hours ago, Raiyan said: 女 + 且 = jiě Although it looks like character 女 next to character 且, jiě is a single syllable, therefore it's a single character: 姐. Notice how the radical is different from character 女: it's narrower and it has only 2 strokes. This is very different from 女人 which is a word composed of two characters. Here 女 is full size, has 3 strokes, and is pronounced nǚ. So this word is pronounced nǚ+ren
