Studying Chinese language and literature?

Can anyone guide me if it is a good decision to do a one year non-degree course in Chinese language and literature from PKU or Tsinghua? I have been told that there are a lot of people in PKU campus (and also in Tsinghua University and BLCU) who speak English so you don't get to practice speaking in Chinese.

Also, what does your application need to stand out from other applications to get accepted in Peking University or Tsinghua apart from hsk 4 and hskk intermediate score? Will having an hsk 5 score help?

Can you say a little bit more about your background? What experience, if any, do you have with Chinese? What do you hope to do with your Chinese in the end?

i really honestly think that in language study more famous universities don’t often provide better courses. When it comes to the literature or cultural aspects, there’s a good chance that the big name schools will have an edge in what they provide, but for the nuts and bolts learning to speak, read etc. its usually better to choose based on factors like classroom hours, fees, possible scholarships etc etc
