Vocab Tracker - a tool to segment Chinese words and a free alternative to LingQ

VocabSplitter

Recommended Posts

The tool is called VocabTracker. It provides the following features for Chinese Learners :

  1. Segment Chinese texts into words. (97% accuracy)
  2. Integrate MDBG dictionary seamlessly. Also provides NCIKU(LINE Dictionary) as a reference.
  3. Integrate the SRS (Space Repetition System) to help the learners memorize the words more efficiently.
  4. Share learning material with each other.

To use the tool, the learner can import a piece of text into it (along with Audios and Videos), then the tool can segment the texts into words (with 97% accuracy). And then it can highlight the words with different colors to remind the learners if they have seen the word before. It looks like the following:

Click the “Import” button on the “Library” page to import your text:

Copy and paste your texts into the dialog, and provide the source of the video or audio file:

The tool will segment the texts into words and highlight them with colors to remind the learners whether they have seen the word before:

The red underline of a word means that the learner has never seen the word before; the blue underline means that the learner has met the word but hasn't "mastered" that word yet; no underline means the learner has already "mastered" that word.

Because it has integrated a Chinese-English dictionary, so the learner can select any texts on the page to get the definition of selected text (including sentences), and then they can add the words to their vocabulary:

After the learner adds several words into his/her vocabulary, this tool can schedule a review date for each word in the vocabulary based on a learning technique called Spaced Repetition System. The learner can go to the Vocabulary page to select the words which are due for reviewing, and then the tool can generate an exam for the learner. The exams will test the learner's knowledge of pinyin, definition, and the usage of the word. The following is an example:

Go to the “Vocabulary” page, and then select the words which are due for reviewing:

The tool will generate an exam to test the learner's knowledge of a word:

If the question is too hard for the learner, he/she can click "Show more hints" button to let the tool provide more hints:

And best of all, the tool is free.

It can be found at: https://www.vocabtracker.com

It's recommended to use a PC to access this tool, because the iOS and Android apps are still under development at this moment.

A few updates to the tool:
  1. Added support for Traditional Chinese, English, French and Spanish
  2. Added feature to export vocabulary to Anki.
  3. Added vocabulary importing feature.
  4. Changed the phrase marker from "《《" and "》》" to "{{" and "}}".

The following are the details of changes:

Traditional Chinese support

Now the learner can select the language (Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese) when he/she imports the text:
select-traditional-chinese-on-import-page.thumb.png.295de9d7113c1407d3d178e3144122fd.png

Vocabulary Exporting feature.
Now the learner can export his/her vocabulary on the Vocabulary Page:
select-export-on-vocabulary-page.thumb.png.63466ec51cb5f50dd820177dcea1d819.png

select-content-for-each-csv-column.thumb.png.aa7f792e515706c0c2acc0e6f2d1aae7.png

If the learner wants to export the vocabulary to Anki, he/she can specify 2 columns in the exported CSV file. For example, if I specify the first column as "Cloze, Defination", and the second column as "Word" in the Export dialog:
specify-only-2-columns-in-the-exported-csv-file.thumb.png.6cdddf130ed0d720668b25ba70bea5d9.png

Then I can get the exported CSV file containing 2 columns, and I can import it into Anki. The cards in Anki will look like the following:
front-of-card-in-anki.thumb.png.efde3b923ad0238c169ee8c2675947e3.png

back-of-card-in-anki.thumb.png.e0bd2b65c1e50c1bae26fe55eaf2f56f.png

Vocabulary importing feature

To import the learner's vocabulary, he/she can click the "Import" button on the vocabulary page. And then follow the instructions on the Vocabulary Import page:
import-vocabulary.thumb.png.7de901252c6798960b5a784b1d21e1af.png
The learner only needs to specify the "word" and its "status". The tool will generate the "pinyin", "definition" and the "cloze" for the imported words automatically.

Changed the phrase marker from "《《" and "》》" to "{{" and "}}"
Before the change, we were using "《《" and "》》" as phrase markers. Now, we have changed the markers to "{{" and "}}":

Encountered an error when trying to fetch data from server:SyntaxError: Unexpected token < in JSON at position 0

Sorry that we were upgrading the server to support learning more languages (Chinese, English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and more languages are being added will come soon) yesterday. I guess when you were trying to login, it just happened that the upgrading was still in process. The server should be stable now, could you try logging in again and let me know if you still have the issue?

We have released a Chrome plugin, which can analyze texts on any web page. The following is an example of analyzing texts on wikipedia:

It can also popup dictionaries when you click on a word:

The plugin is at https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/vocab-splitter/dmnblpfefmpaflamlfgmimhkmdmhlcda

It's free. And if you like it, can you give it a 5 star rating?

Thanks!
