In a short story, I came across a sentence with one word that I cannot figure out.

A girl is locked up in a room which is curtained off with, well, curtains. She is also medicated and thus does not always comprehend her surroundings. She is now very upset because of news she received and wants to get out.

她想掀起窗帘来,可是那窗帘一层一层又一层,她被困在其中,徒劳无功地一层接一层衔着,尘埃噗噗地掉下来,她开始咳嗽,几近窒息。

'She wanted to open the curtains, but there waslayer upon layer upon layer of curtains, she was suffocated in them, without result she 衔 one layer after the other, dust started to flutter down, she started to cough, she almost suffocated.'

My question: what does 衔 mean here? My dictionaries tell me it means all kinds of things, none of which seem to work in this sentence.

Thanks in advance for any help!

The 又 was my own typo (I have now corrected it). 衔 as a pinyin typo for 掀 makes a lot of sense meaning-wise. Although it is typed correctly earlier in the sentence. Glad to hear that at least 衔 is strange to you as well.
