I don't understand the usage of this pattern of grammar -Zhong-

The phrase is the following one:

"Tāmen zhōng de yīgè wèn:"

I know what it means but how does that grammar work?

I have no idea what that means. By any chance do you have the Chinese version (the actual Hanzi characters?)

It's not a complete sentence — I would assume it's not intended to be due to the ":" at the end.

This might be a little difficult to grasp because of the words that are left out and the fact that the end is left off. In other words, it is an elliptical fragment. 

 

Perhaps in a "fuller" form of the statement it would be easier for you to see how the grammar works:

 

他们中的一个人问我，”你为什么去北京？“
