Martin Symonds reminded me of the “I + 1 “ concept when talking to teachers or language partners. “ I “ represents the amount of knowledge of your target language and the language partner / teacher needs to talk to you with “ I + 1 “ and be aware of your limitations on the target language.

How would you explain this concept using Chinese to a Chinese person ?

The i+1 concept comes from Krashen's Input Hypothesis and is just a numerical representation of the notion of "comprehensible input" (可理解输入), which in practice is used interchangeably with the concept of i+1.

Just saying 可理解输入 will do the job in most cases. You could also refer them to the Chinese Wikipedia page for Krashen's input hypothesis (输入假说), where the i+1 concept is explained, at length, in Chinese.
