Ncao Posted November 24, 2005 at 01:01 AM Report Share Posted November 24, 2005 at 01:01 AM I heard Shanghainese refered as 滬語 before. I know 滬 stand for Shanghai, so is 滬 just for Shanghainese or all Wu dialects?
ala Posted November 24, 2005 at 04:42 AM Report Share Posted November 24, 2005 at 04:42 AM 沪 (滬) is the abbreviation for Shanghai. 沪语 is just Shanghainese, and actually only refers to the city proper variant (which is considered de facto standard). The other abbreviation for Shanghai is 申, but there is no 申语. 吴 is the abbreviation for the eastern Jiangnan 江南 region, so 吴语 is the Wu dialects, which also includes Shanghainese. 沪 and 吴 in Shanghainese are pronounced the same though. I guess the analogy would be 台语 (Taiwanese) versus 闽语 (Min dialects).
