klortho Posted January 30, 2006 at 12:32 PM Report Posted January 30, 2006 at 12:32 PM I just thought of a new game, and I'm curious if anyone else has ever thought of it or tried it. I'm sure everybody here knows about the idea of "six degrees of separation", and maybe most of you also know about the game "Six degrees of Kevin Bacon". Here, I propose an extension to it. The idea is that you try to link up any other character to the character "真" through a maximum of six steps. Characters are linked together if they appear together in a very common Chinese word. For example, say I give you the character for box, xiāng 箱. It turns out that can be linked in only two steps, through the intermediate character "皮 pí": 皮箱 píxiāng - suitcase, and 真皮 zhēnpí - real or genuine leather. It doesn't matter what the order of the characters in a word is. I picked "真" because it appears in a lot of words, and because it rhymes with "separation" and "Bacon". Anyway, I'm sure I'll suck at it, because my vocabulary isn't that good yet. But it might be fun for native, or near-native speakers. Quote
roddy Posted January 30, 2006 at 01:22 PM Report Posted January 30, 2006 at 01:22 PM Interesting. I'll challenge you with the character '平' and see how you do. Quote
klortho Posted January 30, 2006 at 01:43 PM Author Report Posted January 30, 2006 at 01:43 PM Too easy: "平正 - just", "真正 genuine". (Okay, I admit, I had to use the dictionary -- but I did disclaim that I wouldn't be any good at it.) How about 汇? P.S. Would "六度真" work as a name for this game? Quote
amego Posted January 30, 2006 at 04:23 PM Report Posted January 30, 2006 at 04:23 PM Interesting... P.S. Would "六度真" work as a name for this game? Yea, I find the name nice. It occurs to me as "six times of truth". How about 汇? 汇编 编写 写真 compilation, collate ; edit ; do a portrait Okay, i did use a dict I challenge you to my name 孙伟新. Use any of the 3 characters, you can also do for all 3 cases Quote
klortho Posted January 31, 2006 at 12:57 PM Author Report Posted January 31, 2006 at 12:57 PM How about: 孙子 - 空子 - 真空 新正 - 真正 伟人 - 真人 I had to use a dictionary for all of these, which is cheating, I know. Isn't anyone else interested in playing? Here are some open challenges that I came up with without looking at a dictionary (it's easier to go *away* from 真 than towards it): 楚 国 在 识 Quote
