Korean and Japanese consumption of fish

Recommended Posts

Did anyone notice that the fish Koreans and Japanese regularly eat are different than what the Chinese usually eat?

Most people are aware of this difference. Yet I found that the predominant type of fish found on dining tables in Korean homes and restaurants are mackerel and sardines.

Mackerel is one of my favorites although it tends to stink during pre-cooking. When I cook my own mackerel, I broil it in the oven.

Korean mackerel is never fried, and is usually broiled or grilled. Mackerel, like salmon, is high in omega-3 fatty acids. Research shows that women who eat fish high in omega-3 during pregnancy are more likely to produce smarter babies.

On the other hand I never eat sardines even though it sometimes comes with your main entree. I view it as a nuisance.

Japanese eat a lot of tuna, most of it raw. Yet like Korean diners, they also consume a lot of sardines.
