The most faithful tributary -- Ryukyu

Recommended Posts

Ian_Lee

Which kingdom was the most faithful Chinese tributary?

Ryukyu (present day Okinawa).

Up on the facade of their castle in the capital city of Naha, the Ryukyu kingdom faithfully hanged the 4-characters placard "Land of Courtesy" endowed by the Ming Emperor. (On the rebuilt Naha castle that was completed in the '90s, the same re-made placard is hung there.)

Even though it was subjugated by the Satsuma Han from southern Kyushu in 1605, the Ryukyu kingdom still tried its best to maintain the annual tribute to Beijing.

In front of many residential houses in Okinawa nowadays, the Okinawans still adhere to the long-held custom of putting a small stone pillar with the Chinese character "Rock Holds Fast (General)" outside their front door.

Such custom has been lost in most other Chinese societies.
