Interesting theories all round, though I'm writing more than two years late. Like amego, I wanted to mention that in Singapore slang (probably from Hokkien/Fujianese, or possibly Teochew/Chaozhouhua) niao3 means to disturb or bother. I don't think it's derived from Mandarin, for some reason.
