NancyL Posted June 10, 2006 at 04:47 AM Report Share Posted June 10, 2006 at 04:47 AM Hi! I am new to this forum and would first like to say a huge thanks to all as this site has helped me in planning my trip to Beijing. I will be heading to Beijing at end of August to study Mandarin at BCLU for a year and am interested in complimenting my language studies with a year long martial arts program. There is beginner program at Beijing Sports University for a 1year, Mon-Fri 8am-11am. I think this will clash with BCLU language classes - does anyone know what the timetable is at BCLU and if this is so? If it does, can anyone offer any advice on how I might be able to fit in martial arts training around the BCLU timetable. Thx!
self-taught-mba Posted June 10, 2006 at 04:14 PM Report Share Posted June 10, 2006 at 04:14 PM If you are a do it yourself type there are plenty of options here in BJ (private classes, clubs etc. many listed outside the Beiyu gym) Also depends on if you want formal, or not and what style, location etc. I personally do wing chung in beijing in the evenings but it is far from BLCU although many people car pool. (that's the school I cooperate with).
got_no_jaffas Posted June 11, 2006 at 08:42 AM Report Share Posted June 11, 2006 at 08:42 AM trying to do the martial arts programme at the sports & a language at blcu will clash as each require lessons in the morning. incidentally, i have heard from a former student at sports that the courses are split between locals & foriegners & the foreigners get a slightly different study programme (ie) not as good. the sanda contact combat does not come highly regarded, the chinese get their asses kicked everytime by every foreign team. however i do not know about the traditional wushu programme. if traditional wushu is not your thing, the beijing brazilian jiu sitsu academy covers a better mma type martial arts with the instructor formerly trained in the US with the gracie family. incidentally his students kicked the arse of every other martial arts school students in bejing in recent tournaments. I am one of them. (still a cool art form tho) besides why come all the way here to study something you can get elsewhere. you don't have to go to a PE institution anyway. many old practioners wouldn't bother going there to teach. I've heard of people meeting people of considerable skill in tai chi that they met at 5 AM at the park. they might not be "masters" but the old man with 60 years of practice might deliver more to you. (of course lots of pianzi too but that is another story. true practioners will be happy to share with you if you are enthusiastic and don't need to get rich off you.) I think you can wait until you get here and ask around, so you don't enroll in something then regret it.
got_no_jaffas Posted June 11, 2006 at 06:19 PM Report Share Posted June 11, 2006 at 06:19 PM you can do some martial arts courses at blcu, albeit not intensively. there is also a lot of taichi around & some wushu. i've seen students with their long sticks twirling around. i like watching the nunchuks class personally, when someone hits themselves in the head, it always cracks me up!! from there you can always ask for private tuition. the sports university enables you to take a language course of about 10 hours a week. you can supplement this with evening classes at nearby private schools in wudaokou. but the martial arts course at the sports university entails 4 hours a day everyday of physical workout so it does get very tiring unless you are used to that kind of physical training on a regular basis. to do the martial arts & the full time language course is asking a lot of commitment & endurance because the language course in itself is pretty tough going. I think that might be good idea. Why do you really want to go to BLCU anyway? Is it really strong preference, the transcript issue or what? Their quality has been sliding with classes getting larger than 25. Besides being at the sports university might he be a lot more motivating especially if you have the chance to use the Chinese in doing something that you love. It might give meaning to your learning.
