Long Zhiren Posted August 28, 2006 at 10:00 PM Report Share Posted August 28, 2006 at 10:00 PM Here's a thread for that oft-asked question... Here's a list of common Chinese given names. If you want a Chinese name, you can do it the Chinese way of choosing non-Chinese names, and pick one that looks good to you (throw darts?). http://www.20000-names.com/female_chinese_names.htm The website needs help with its lack of Chinese! Here's a bunch of "accepted" transliterations. These are the way that they are found transliterated into Chinese in the Bible (very popular source of names in the West), often based on an original Greek or Hebrew pronunciation rather than a modern Western equivalent: Abbey (Abigail) Here's a few more: Arnold 阿諾 (This is how Arnold Schwarzeneggar (阿諾 舒華辛力加) gets his name done in Chinese media) Gregory 哥萊哥萊 (This is how Gregory Peck (哥萊哥萊 畢克) gets his name done in Chinese media.) Helga (or Olga) 赫果 (based on how the German island Helgoland is transliterated in Chinese geography.)

Long Zhiren Posted August 30, 2006 at 05:23 AM Author Report Share Posted August 30, 2006 at 05:23 AM You know what's funny? I have three male cousins in Taiwan. They each picked Western names. We got two Andrews and one Bruce. They didn't make it down the list very far! The females picked out Jenny and Susan, thus proving again that men are lazier? My cousins on the mainland haven't bothered picking out Western names.
Lu Posted August 31, 2006 at 03:46 PM Report Share Posted August 31, 2006 at 03:46 PM I once read about this TW guy named Aaron. Why Aaron? He opened the name book and picked the first name in it :-)
