PDA's and Character Recognition

Since many of the postings mentioned how slow looking up characters up in the dictionaries is, I wanted to mention this option-

very fast! but requires at least $200 . . .

1. Palm OS PDA (anything from old Palm V and Sony Clie to the new 'smart phones')

2. Chinese dictionary program, I use the Oxford Dict which costs about $50 but is very usable and accurate. (www.pleco.com)

With these two you can simply write the character on the screen of your pda and *boom!* you have the definition! Much faster then looking it up by radical, or even pin-yin.

Most PDAs can fit in a shirt pocket, I have found this to be even more convenient then carrying around a concise paper dictionary.

If you have a palmphone you can write sms in chinese and look up characters directly from the messages!

Another note, if you buy a pda in China it should come with a Chinese OS and the ability to handwrite chinese to any program. These two features cost about $70 if bought separately . . .
