A PhD in linguistics, that's a cool plan. In that case, I think your next step is to look into which universities offer such a PhD, and which of those are most suitable for you academically. Once you've done that, you should have a rather short list of options. And at that point you can start looking at things like the politics and climate and such of those different places. If you want to get a PhD, the most important thing is to get one that is well-regarded academically, and worth your while.

 

Do you have a Master's already? If not, you first need to look into which universities are most suitable for getting a good MA in linguistics. Start by asking your linguistics professor for advice.

 

In my opinion, if you want a career in academia, your first concern is which university is most suitable, not which country you'd like to live in. An advantage of academia is that there are usually many foreign students and scholars in universities, so most of the time you're just one of the scholars, not an expat/immigrant (and certainly not a cleaning lady).

 

Opening a restaurant is best left to people who really, really want to open a restaurant. So it's good you were joking :-)

Its not the place so much as the people. You want to be where the people you care about are. If this is not possible then you want to be where your passion takes you.

 

If you want to study linguistics and not just Chinese then you can pretty much study anywhere. I was born and lived in Canada til I was 15. Great country for opportunities, its has a wide variety of nationalities. Vancouver is supposed to be full of Chinese people who left Hong Kong just before reunification uncertain what the future would bring (I heard it was nick named Hongcouver).

 

Canada always seemed the sort of place you could do and be what you wanted regardless of your background, sex, or nationality. There lots of pros for Canada but also some cons, winters are really cold and long, but if you can cope with winter in Beijing or Harbin you could cope with winter in Canada. There are some nasty bugs and poison ivy is pretty mean. The summers are great, hot and sunny, the people are friendly and helpful.

 

Having said all that I now live in the UK because the people I care about are here and it is actually a good place to live.

 

I have also lived in USA and although it it is an interesting place I would not choose to live there.

 

I can't think of living in china for several reasons, bad health, people I care about live here and I have cats but I would really have liked to have had the chance to go and live in china when I was much younger but I was a teenager/young adult in the 70's and it was not common then for people to go and live/study in china.

 

So if I was you i would make the most of my time in china and then maybe try a holiday in some of the places you are thinking of moving to and see what happens.

Maybe even look beyond the PhD and think about after. If you would like to be a professor, do research, and write some scholarly books, a suitable academic environment is needed for that too. Hopefully you will be able to find such a new spiritual home both for your study and the launch of your career.

 

I think I would try to set aside the concerns you have about not being an expat or an immigrant.

Actually, they do have bananas on Taiwan. And, in fact, Taiwan was once known as 香蕉王國 (or banana kingdom).

Lately, I've been watching a Taiwanese food program called 台灣食堂 (Taiwan Taste in English) dubbed into Cantonese for the Hong Kong market. I guess it's currently airing because they've been loading about an episode a week for the past month or so on the share sites. Anyway, I've found original episodes in Taiwanese Mandarin but none of the ones from the Cantonese series.

 

Anyway, one of the episodes was on mangos, bananas and pineapples, three fruits that Taiwan produces and they said that Taiwan was at one time called the banana kingdom because of the amount of bananas she once produced.

 

Kind of interesting. Like A Bite of China, but, on the Taiwan food scene. Pure food porn.

Angelina, you can't judge the political situation (of any country) from one case, or a few cases. You need to look at the bigger picture. Especially if you want to go into academia.

 

For example: Angelina is from Macedonia. Angelina is studying Chinese. So, Macedonians are interested in Chinese.

 

Now perhaps that is actually true, but I hope you see such reasoning is completely flawed. Similarly, 'Bei Dao is a good poet. Now, Bei Dao has received a poetry award from my country. So, the political situation in my country is maybe not that bad' is flawed reasoning.

Oh and there was a (there are rumors it was US and Germany backed) terrorist attack on May 9.

It is hard to decide what really is going on and the ways of foreign policy and secret services can be very devious. Nevertheless I've a hard time believing the attack was Germany backed. US I find harder to judge. I don't think Germany has any interest in destabilizing Macedonia and the Balkan. Weakening the present regime is likely to be in the political interest of the ethnic Albanians. I don't really see how that is beneficial with the present anti muslim sentiments. Destabilisation of Macedonia may have an averse effect on the entire Balkan, Germany and the EU have no interest in a war at our doorstep with another flood of (Albanian) refugees.

 

I agree however that the situation is worrisome.

I'm afraid this is getting a little off-topic but you seem to overestimate the importance of Macedonia to world order.. Germany has zero interest in destabilising the Balkans, to the contrary, it wants to label Kosovo as a safe country so as to prevent more asylum seekers to travel to Germany... Quite frankly, the Germanophobia in some parts of Europe is getting ridiculous, it seems some countries need a stronger country to blame for their ills, much like the US serves that function in other parts of the world. But the ineptitude and corruption of the local governments and many of the social ills are home-made.

Since the suggestions here were Denmark, Canada, and Taiwan, I would like to point out why I would rather move back home.

 

 

So I am single and tried Tinder. A Danish guy is a match. No problems, things go well. We are using English. I am wearing my sunglasses on the photo. 

 

All of a sudden. He writes this:

 

  - 你是杭州本地人吗？

 

I tell him I am from Macedonia. 

 

Big change in his behavior. He starts getting cold and distant.

 

Today he finally writes out of courtesy:

 

  - So Angelina do you have some more photos from the Balkans?

 

My reply:

 

 - Haha I thought you deleted me or something. Yes, we are poor, practice cannibalism, work as prostitutes abroad, and would do anything to emmigrate. I am sorry that I don't own five apartments in downtown Beijing and that Mandarin is not my native language. 

 

He removes me from his contacts.

And somehow all the men who look Chinese wrote about their schools. Like you put a photo and then write Tsinghua '17 or UCLA '16.

Then everyone loves traveling. It's all Hong Kong/Shanghai/London. Whatever.

Maybe stereotypes are true.
