Puzzles in setting up anki....

Flickserve

Recommended Posts

I am trying out TysonD's method of using Anki but puzzling over a couple of  things on the setup.

I have imported a deck into Anki and a typical Note is shown (see "Anki-screenshot_00k.jpg"). It is based on the "Chinese (advanced)" template. When I use the deck to test myself, it will show the whole Chinese sentence. When I press "show answer", the rest of the information turns up (except the screenshot image).

Questions:

1) How do I change cards in the pack to Cloze deletion? And then get it test Cloze deletion?

2) How do I change it to show English first i.e. recall and then just show recall cards? I am not able to flip the card (see "Anki-screenshot_01k.jpg")

3) How would I be able to get the sound to come out first? Then later, when I press "show answer" i would like the Chinese and English text to come up? I think I need card 3 (see "Anki-screenshot_02k"). But what do I do from there?  [This arrangement is to help test listening skills)

If there's something specific you're not understanding, please let me know.

Plan how you want your front and back to look--what fields on what side, formatting, etc.--then write it as HTML with {{FieldNames}} like this.

Put {{Sound}} on the front.

anki is html... it's like writing a webpage.

and the sound plays depending on where you put the {{sound}} in your card... on the front, back, or both...

interestingly I'm actually also doing a Subs2SRS deck of 饮食男女 right now... did you make the deck yourself from Subs2SRS or did you find that deck someplace?

it's a pretty great movie ;D

@iand, @dtcamero

Thanks for the directions to the specific parts! Once I had more time to try things out, I will get back (though knowing me, something will go wrong).

Unfortunately, I have absolutely no idea how to write a webpage so if you tell me that it's simply a matter of writing HTML, format as appropriate, then sorry, it is not simple and nor intuitive for me.

@dtcamero, I made the deck myself. The srt I found were in two parts. The 1st part was relatively straightforward (i.e. I could match things up with the audio and get a picture). The 2nd part srt were very difficult to match up. In the end, I couldn't really get the correct screenshot. This was the first film I tried, and was a bit of an experiment so I was not careful enough on the name of the deck. Why is the srt in two parts? I think this film originally came out in the days of VCD and therefore on two discs. And yes, it's a great movie - but I don't think I will try and copy some of the more slurred lines

The basics of HTML are simple. If you're ever used the formatting options in this forum, you've seen something a lot like it. It's the styling options (CSS) that add some complexity.

To format some text in HTML, you wrap it in opening and closing tags. For example, <i>italic</i> text and <b>bold</b>. Tags can also have attributes, like to include an image, you put its filename in the src attribute: <img src=blahblah.jpg>.

If you want to change how a certain block of text appears, there are two steps. Let's say I put {{Chinese}} in the front template, so it shows the contents of the Chinese field on the front of the card. I want to change the font size and color of the text of that field. I need to attach a tag to the text that I can refer to later to format it:

<div class=chinese>{{Chinese}}</div>

Now in the styling section I add this CSS code:

.chinese {

  font-size: 24pt;

  font-color: red;

}

This is how most card editing will work: wrap text in various HTML tags, optionally use the Styling field to change its appearance. One tag you usually see on cards is <hr>, a horizontal rule separating the front content from the back.

ya in order to make a subs2srs deck you first need to have a perfectly timed set of subs.

often subs are broken into two parts, and if that doesn't match your video then you should use a subs editor like aegisub to join them together, change timings, etc.

i'm actually going after this movie specifically because you have so many people speaking different kinds of mandarin (and 四川话 lol).

I did this with japanese and it's a great way to get used to matching common slurred speach with it's real meaning... getting used to hearing actual chinese as it is spoken and slurred and contracted by common people.

this is something I'm having a hard time with at the moment for chinese, and subs2srs is a great remedy.

Thanks for the info. With your help, I noticed a few new things. Because the anki instructions go heavily straight into talking about HTML, this got me rather confused due to my inexperience with both anki itself and HTML.

When I opened up a note and then looked at the card, the front preview panel writes in big letters "edit to customise". So if you are new to anki, you automatically try to customise in that front preview panel rather than the html on the left hand side.

However, if I don't know how to write html, I am a bit buggered. I mean, all I want is a card to hear a sentence first, and another to see an English sentence. Then I noticed the "add field" tab at the bottom and clicked on that. I had tried it before, would see the front preview panel change and I was wondering 'if the front preview says "edit to customise" in big letters, why the f**k can't I delete anything..'

This time when I clicked on "add field", I watched the left panel and saw the HTML code change. Bingo! Everything became clear and I can see now how to create a new card from a note and customise it. The confusion arose from the "edit to customise" in the front preview panel which are huge (so that leads you to think that is the main area) and very misleading. I think I would have been better off without that particular text.

For the cloze issue. I came across another problem. Will pair that up later.

I converted all the cards in a deck to Cloze but when I tried to Cloze the card using the [...] icon, I got a message to change the Note to cloze type. However, all the cards arealready cloze type.

What trick have I missed?

@iand

Many thanks for your help!

You really helped me clear up a lot of problems.

I originally installed anki and played around with it over a year ago and used it for single vocabulary but it got rapidly boring and also difficult to use because of these similar problems. Recently, I really wanted to try and crack using it hence a lot of time on trying to work it out.

I wasn't able to make a cloze note from scratch. I installed a fresh version of anki on another computer and cloze deletion worked on the test card I made. Thinking this was rather odd, I went back into my desktop, creating a third card from the notes and changing the note type to cloze. I couldn't get cloze to work again (obviously) so I went back into opening the card on both computers and compared the html. The cloze card on my desktop was missing {{cloze}}.

So, to the front card, I then added {{cloze:Hanzi}}, added the audio , redesigned the back and hey presto, the cloze deletion worked as advertised!

So, in the early days when I was playing around trying to get to know anki, I must have deleted some HTML within the cloze card without realising what I was doing.
