Phone Protection Apps

I just lost a phone to someone in Shanghai. I made a police report and today I'll be trying to get my phone number back. I'm glad I had the serial number and everything but I'm not confident that they'll try to find it. T.T I really wish I could make the phone unstable remotely so that they can't re-sell it without re-manufacturing it.

Anywho, I bought a new HTC and I'm having trouble downloading a good anti-theft app. I know of quite a few but of course they need google play. Is there a way to sneak in play on these phones? Or do you know of a good anti-theft app?

I'd like one that can remotely sound an alarm  or take pictures.

I've asked quite a few locals and it seems no one even knows what an anti-theft app is. They kept explaining that they just don't download things with viruses...I knew my point was missed. Every app I've tried will not fully work. I'm going to try Avast next.

@roddy The police were quite interesting.

I don't know who does but I don't carry my passport around every single time I go out. Thus when I got to the station, although it was immediately after I realized the phone was stolen (less than an hour after the crime), I was told to go home and then come back to start filing a report. Doesn't matter that we were literally down the street from the crime scene that I expect a worker took part in. I had to make the two hour journey. The police officers then asked me why I was at McDonalds in the morning because they found it crazy that anyone would go for breakfast so early or that they even had it. They also couldn't understand why I'd take the time to not only eat but attempt to study there.

I gave them the box that my phone had come in so they could get the serial numbers and such, and told them it's just like the picture. They were very adamant about knowing exactly where the phone was when it was taken. Was it in your pocket, on the table in your bag? Then they asked for a phone number they could reach me at....They are not allowed to make international calls so they didn't accept my skype number and they don't do emails. Luckily a friend was there and gave his phone number. (I had previously set up a language exchange appointment. The only reason I went for a McD breakfast T.T)

Be aware of that if you ever need the police. They need a local number to contact you. It's probably best to keep a business card of your school, workplace or hotel.

Getting the phone number back was fairly easy for me. I just arrived here and called so many people while apartment hunting. China mobile needs you to remember at least 5 phone calls that you made within three months I think. I had written numbers of landlords down. However, I hear that they only need your ID if you register your SIM card with them. I had bought my original sim from a corner shop and even though I bought the phone after that and the employee scanned both my passport and the sim card information, but he didn't register the number to me. I suggest just getting your sim cards at phone companies to avoid this kind of situation.

I hope I helped someone~

Thanks for the follow up. I used to love McD's in the morning - you're not going to get better coffee at 8am*, the place is nice and quiet, and the one I went to had fantastic sunlight.

*may not be true now.
