zhuhao Posted July 6, 2010 at 09:58 AM Report Share Posted July 6, 2010 at 09:58 AM I didn't know whether to post this here or under "music"... I'm interested in finding some Peking Opera to watch (hence why I posted here), preferably with some English or modern Chinese subtitles. I've been watching some with classical subtitles, but I haven't studied classical in years and have only the vaguest of ideas of what's going on (ie, the stuff I recognize is the same as what my sister, who studied Japanese, is getting out of the subtitles). Anyone have any recommendations or links?

zhuhao Posted July 7, 2010 at 07:59 AM Author Report Share Posted July 7, 2010 at 07:59 AM Well, without subtitles I can understand, it takes a lot of... well, dedication to work out what's going on from the action. There isn't much action - I mean, it's opera. People sing about everything, rather than showing it. So without being able to get a good handle on what's going on, it becomes more about the music and the singing style itself, which is cool but the allure of it doesn't last for too long, personally. For previews, you can search on Youku or Tudou for 京剧,昆剧,越剧。。。 I know there are other styles of opera but I forget what they are.
