davoosh Posted March 27, 2014 at 02:03 PM Report Share Posted March 27, 2014 at 02:03 PM Hello, There seem to be two variants of this character. One which appears 令, but another which appears with the final stroke as a long vertical stroke (i.e. 卩). Japanese fonts seem to always use the second variant. Which of the two ways is the correct way to handwrite this character (traditional characters / 正字) or are both acceptable? Thanks
Hofmann Posted March 27, 2014 at 02:16 PM Report Share Posted March 27, 2014 at 02:16 PM If by 正字 you mean orthodox variant, 卩. However, I prefer not to hook, like every example here.
davoosh Posted March 27, 2014 at 02:18 PM Author Report Share Posted March 27, 2014 at 02:18 PM Thanks, yes I meant the orthodox variant. Are the orthodox variants generally adhered to in writing/calligraphy? What exactly makes them 'orthodox'?
Hofmann Posted March 27, 2014 at 03:09 PM Report Share Posted March 27, 2014 at 03:09 PM Orthodox is generally what you would expect given regular evolution. 卩 usually ends up having a hook, like in 報, 危, and 叩. For 令, one would just expect to put a 卩 under 亼 and leave it. However, in writing, the vast majority of good examples leave the hook off. And of course some of them turn the vertical stroke into a dot.
