kkisjj Posted January 15, 2016 at 01:49 PM Report Share Posted January 15, 2016 at 01:49 PM Could anyone kindly explain to me the expression 扮猪吃老虎? A pig eats a tiger? Does it mean a black horse who emerges to fame and success out of everyone's expectation? Thank you all in advance!!
skylee Posted January 15, 2016 at 02:11 PM Report Share Posted January 15, 2016 at 02:11 PM In Cantonese we say 扮豬食老虎 -> http://cantonese.org/search.php?q=%E6%89%AE%E8%B1%AC%E9%A3%9F%E8%80%81%E8%99%8E
lips Posted January 15, 2016 at 02:12 PM Report Share Posted January 15, 2016 at 02:12 PM Fake weakness to fool and defeat a stronger foe; act dumb to win. Key word is 扮 - disguise, masquerade.

lips Posted January 16, 2016 at 01:38 AM Report Share Posted January 16, 2016 at 01:38 AM Not necessarily Cantonese. It is used in the mainland and Taiwan as well (maybe not as common as in Hong Kong or Guangdong). In some version of The Thirty-Six Stratagems 三十六計, the stratagem 假痴不癫 is called 扮豬吃虎 instead.
