but my old brain was overwhelmed with all the new characters

That is why graded readers can be useful, reading something from beginning to end and understanding it, is very good for building confidence as well as learning new characters.

which might be true for the first page but if you keep learning the characters that you don't know the number of new characters per page will get smaller.

This is correct.  The article is pointing out your approximate level once you have passed HSK6.  The more characters you learn after that, the less new characters there will be.

That's exactly my point, the first 10 pages won't contain 200 new characters.  By that logic the first 500 pages would contain 10000 new characters.

There will be approximately 20 unknown characters per page, but the thing to realise about this statistic is that they won't necessarily be *unique* unknown characters, so if you were reading and not learning any of the characters you came across then, yes, in the first 500 pages you would encounter characters you didn't know 10,000 times, but many of them would be repeated characters.

If you are learning new words as you go, then of course the values change.

That doesn't negate the point (or the maths) of the article, which is to show that contrary to various beliefs and expectations, HSK 6 still leaves a lot to be desired and there's still a lot of work ahead of you to get to the point where you can comfortably read native content without being overwhelmed with new vocabulary.

Twenty new characters per page is certainly a struggle, I agree.

For sure.  If you are encountering this many new characters per page, you are likely reading material that is not suited to your level.
