Strange font errors in MS Word with 直

flameproof

Recommended Posts

The left one is displayed with a traditional Chinese / Japanese font, the right one is displayed with a simplified Chinese font, 直 (Unihan U+76F4, http://www.unicode.org/cgi-bin/GetUnihanData.pl?codepoint=76F4&useutf8=true). When they encoded the unihan characters, there were minute differences between the characters of simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean, so they were given different encodings, when you use an internet browser and encounter such a character, whichever language you set your internet browser is the font that is installed on your hard drive which will be used to display that character in your browser. If you have set simplified Chinese as the default language, then the UTF encoding will select an installed simplified Chinese font for display and the character on the right will be displayed; if you selected Japanese, then a Japanese font will be used and the character on the left displayed. This way everyone's happy with their accustomed fonts.

Thanks! The left one it "Batang", the right one is "Simsun". I get a similar error in ZDT, which uses MS Arial Unicode.

No big issue now, but was strange first time when I couldn't find that character in Pleco...
