Women's Sexual Health

as if being a woman wasn't annoying enough... now we have to do it in Chinese.

Hopefully this will help:

Some basic vocabulary:

Period: 月经 (yue jing) 月事 (yue shi)

Pad: 月经带 (yue jing dai)

Tampon: 卫生栓 (wei sheng shuan)

Condom:避孕套 (bi yun tao)

Pill: 妈富隆 (ma fu long)

Gynecologist: 妇科医生(fu ke yi sheng)

Pregnancy Test: 早早孕检测试卡 (zao zao yun jian ce shi ka)

Positive: 阳性 (yang xing)

Negative: 阴性 (yin xing)

Pregnant: 怀孕 (huai yun)

Morning after pill: 毓婷 (yu ting) (formal name for pharmacy) or

事后避孕药 (shi hou bi yun yao) (general idea)

Abortion: 堕胎 (duo tai)

Rape: 奸 (jian)

Herpes: 疱疹 (pao zhen)

Aids: 艾滋病 (Ai zi bing)

Gonorrhea: 淋病 (lin bing)

Syphilis: 梅毒 (meidu)

If you find yourself in a situation where you need to take the morning after pill, you do not need to get a prescription, and, as a matter of fact, some hospitals don't have it. It is available for around 30 RMB at local drug stores. If you see a doctor they will recommend that you take the pill (also available at the pharmacy with no prescription) for the rest of the cycle, skipping the pills you should have taken, starting on the first day of your last period. This is only to avoid spotting, and is really not that important. It is only for the sake of your undies.

Didn't get much of a chance to explore the subject in Taiwan, but it is quite the possibility that they use another name for it.

The bi yun tao means (prevent pregnancy tao) I don't actually know what the tao means, come to think of it...

bao xian could mean....

bao xian might be to keep safe.

bao can also mean to bulge *snicker* I guess that and the xian from xiansheng.

Ok, enough of reading the dictionary! I think someone will be able to post with the characters for bao xian tao.

condom = 避孕套 = 保險套 = 安全套

Also, in Hong Kong, there are some variations to the terms -

Pad: 月经带 (yue jing dai) = 衛生巾 (sanitary napkin)

Pill: 妈富隆 (ma fu long) = 避孕丸/藥

Rape: 奸 (jian) = 強姦

Aids: 艾滋病 (Ai zi bing) = 愛滋病

Could be RX:

Fluconazole - 氟 康 唑 (fu2 kang1 zuo4)

Nystatin - 制 霉 菌 素 (zhi4 mei2 jun1 su4)

Probably OTC:

Clotrimazole - 克 霉 唑 (ke4 mei2 zuo4)

Miconazole - 咪 康 唑 (mi1 kang1 zuo4)

Tioconazole - 噻 康 唑 (sai1 kang1 zuo4)

Acidophilus (maybe: 嗜 酸 性 shi4 suan1 xing4)

"Condom:避孕套 (bi yun tao)" to the first person who wrote this.

hey to all also, just a tip instead of saying bi yun tao, I suggest to use instead

安全套, because my roomies (chinese) as well as chiense friends here, have told me bi yun tao sounds too "direct" and at times dirty per se. pronounciation is an quan tao.

they are the same meaning, condom, just different level of frankness to it.

enjoy!

I think there's a bit of a gap between these words as they are actually used in everyday spoken Chinese and what the dictionary says.

Condoms are usually referred to as 安全套.

When women talk about their period, they say 好朋友來了. Literally, my "good friend has come." Much like "好朋友來了", a colloquial, often used way to refer to maxi-pads, etc, is 面包 (yes, as in bread). This is what my Chinese wife says.

Given the cultural sensitivity to talking openly about these things, more vague terms are used in every day speech.

i think 老朋友 is a lot more common than 好朋友, wouldn't you agree?

also, i've heard someone say: 我在生理 and heard the pad referred to as 生理带。 but both don't seem to be very common.

also, tampons are also known as "OB".
