jbradfor 681 Posted January 8, 2011 at 04:43 AM Report Share "造成事故後果自負" took me a while to parse, for some reason. I assume it means something like [you will be] responsible for any accident that [you] cause . Thanks for an easy one after some of the recent ones. "馨" was new to me, but that was it. Glenn 65 Posted January 8, 2011 at 05:17 AM Report Share I was really expecting 馨 to be xiang of some flavor. I was surprised to see it's xīn. Link to comment
jbradfor 681 Posted January 10, 2011 at 12:31 AM Report Share At least according to MDBG, 香 is the radical, 殸 is the phonetic. Interestingly enough, 殸 itself is pronounced qing4, and the only other common word with 殸 as the phontic (that I could find) is 聲, which is pronounced sheng1. Link to comment
Glenn 65 Posted January 10, 2011 at 01:46 AM Report Share The Taiwanese MOE's dictionary agrees with that classification. I checked the cantodict too, and it seems the readings aren't any more consistent in Cantonese. They aren't in Japanese, either, for that matter. Link to comment

skylee 1913 Posted January 10, 2011 at 06:06 AM Report Share I checked the cantodict too, and it seems the readings aren't any more consistent in Cantonese. I am not aware of inconsistency in the Cantonese pronunciation of 馨. It is simply "hing". Could you explain more? Link to comment
jbradfor 681 Posted January 10, 2011 at 02:07 PM Report Share I assume by "inconsistent", glenn means that the pronunciation of 殸 by itself is different than the pronunciation of characters that use 殸 as the phonetic component, such as 馨 and 聲 (and 䡰). Well, they can be fragrant. Especially when you do what we usually do: buy a 5 lb bag, use a couple, and then forget about the rest in our pantry..... Link to comment
Glenn 65 Posted January 11, 2011 at 12:49 AM Report Share Yes, I mean between 馨 and 聲 and the phonetic component. Link to comment
