挑战#7: The Cursed Well (Audio Quiz)

Put on your 听力 shoes. This is a clip (1:45) from the audiobook of a horror novel called 《天劫》. Here’s the setup - an older woman (奶奶) and a little girl (小烟) have just bumped into a fortune teller (算命). It's already been hinted at that something is wrong with the girl. See if you can answer these questions without looking at the transcript. The clip alternates between two narrators, but don’t let that throw you.

Cursed Well.mp3

1. Where is the well?

2. What is the fortune teller’s first piece of advice?

3. Why is the woman frightened?

4. The girl shouldn’t leave what place?

Bonus question: Can you guess who the female narrator is? (it is not obvious from the clip, but it is hinted at.)

Transcript

The transcript for tracks 1 to 28 of the audiobook is below. I’ll update it once I finish parsing out the text for all 74 tracks.

That would actually be worth a new topic in its own right if you want to post one. Good stuff, as always!

Another great quiz. I haven't looked at the transcript yet and I don't have all the answers but here's my attempt. I've got some questions as well so if you can give me some "hints" without giving it away, I'd appreciate it.

1. The well is located behind the house.

2. No matter what happens, don't open up the well.

3. The woman 奶奶 is frightened because the well was opened up before.

(Question: Was it opened shortly after the little girl was born? I might not have gotten that part of the conversation about the mother.)

4. The fortune teller tells the woman that if you don't want anything to happen to the the girl, then do not let the girl leave the place that she (the girl) was born. The fortunue teller did tell them to "hide" in the house. Is that correct?

(Question: Where was the girl born? Total guess, but in the well?)

Is the fortune teller the girl's mom?

Very solid work, jkhsu.  Your answers are spot on.

You are very, very close on the timing of the well being opened, but it was not after the girl was born.

The fortune teller doesn't really mention hiding in the house.

The girl was not born in the well, but I like that addition to the story.  They've mentioned that the girl might be a demon reborn (I'm only on track 10), so now I'm hoping that some previous incarnation of her was actually born in the well.

When you say "is the fortune teller the girl's mom", do you mean dad?  Or were you talking about the narrator?

I'm still making my way through this book, but if it ends up being decent, I'll start a topic on it.  Or maybe an audiobooks-with-transcript thread.  I hope to continue making track by track transcripts of audiobooks.  The reason is I really like using the Pleco lyrics reader.

Edit: Also, great idea to add more questions.  Others, feel free.

Gleaves, thanks for the help. I tried listening a few more times but that was about as far as I could get so I took at look at your transcript. Here's my response and some more questions:

In this sentence, "因为那口井早在母亲怀上我不久后就挖开了", what does the "怀上" mean?

I see where I messed up thinking they should hide in their home. I thought it was "躲家" instead of "多加"

Also, I didn't read your bonus question correctly. I thought you asked who the fortune teller was (which I was totally guessing). I think the female narrator is the girl because of the “我" in the sentence "因为那口井早在母亲怀上我不久后就挖开了"?

BTW, great work on the transcription. I should try that as a method to learn Chinese.

Here are some more questions based on some vocab that I missed myself:

1. What was the older woman's feeling when the fortune teller first started to leave?

2. After the fortune teller gives the final advice, how does the fortune teller feel about the advice?

I had the text of the book, which lines up pretty much with the audiobook, so it was just a matter of making a few changes. I'm always on the hunt for audio that has transcripts or something close enough. If I transcribed this from scratch it would have been ugly.

怀上 - become pregnant.

And yep, the little girl is the female narrator.

Thanks! See my explanation on why I didn't get it. Doing these challenges is a really good learning experience!

I know 怀孕 and I know 怀疑 but somehow, when 怀 was put together with 上, I kept thinking about suspicion instead of the other meaning.

Edit: The reason I initially thought it was opened shortly after the girl was born was before reading the transcript, I thought it was 怀生 (I know this is not a word now). That's why I thought it was shortly after pregnant -> birth. For some reason after reading the transcript I totally forgot about the initial meaning of 怀 that I had guessed!

I think there's a 掉字 in there:

Towards the end, 看看小煙,眼裡竟有了幾分心疼, right?

.

This is another one I'd need to take time on to be able to listen and catch everything, so I think I'll pass on answering the questions this time too.

That sentence on the timing of things is pretty tricky, I think. Thanks for the new questions. I'll let others jump in (I've obviously cheated already and looked at the transcript).

Good catch, Glenn.

This was an excellent selection. I managed to get the first four questions by just listening, but couldn't figure out the bonus question without reading the transcript.

Answers to jkhsu's questions:

1. What was the older woman's feeling when the fortune teller first started to leave?

She was still stunned by his first warning.

2. After the fortune teller gives the final advice, how does the fortune teller feel abo

ut the advice?

He seems conflicted. He hopes the warning will be of some use, but he doesn't seem too confident.
