I have same problem. I have worked around it by downloading chinese fonts from the web and using free software for character input and then cut-and-pasting. You can get the free software such as DimSum (this software really is fantastic) and MSword pinyin macros at:

www.mandarintools.com

Alternatively you can always use a web based tool for input such as:

http://www.mdbg.net/chindict/webime2.php?ime=mand_eng_simp

(this one is nice for beginners because it gives you the meaning of the character in English before you choose it.)

I'm not sure but it is quite possible that Windows Office CD has the files you need .

(I read it on a windows forum)

but, you must know someone who has an XP CD , ask him/her to borrow it for a few minutes...any XP disc will do , no matter what version or language.

You can use bittorrent to download the windows xp installation files and then point the East-Asian installer to them. That's what I did and it worked like a charm. Try searching thepiratebay.org or similar for "windows xp".

Disclaimer: I don't think this is illegal if you already own windows... use your good judgement.
