Moving to Zhuhai with cat -- suggestions about route?

Later this year, I am moving to Zhuhai from the U.S. with my partner and our pet cat. We're in the midst of finalizing our travel plans, but are unsure about how best to proceed with the flight. Specifically, we're trying to figure out the best way to get to Zhuhai given that we'll have the cat with us. Most people advise flying into Hong Kong and taking the ferry to Zhuhai. But we can't take the ferry because pets aren't allowed on it (and we can't afford to fly from HKG to Zhuhai by helicopter). So, we're thinking about flying into Guangzhou and travelling south by bus or train. Or maybe into Macau?

Does anyone have any advice regarding this matter? Are pets even allowed on buses/trains?
