please help me pronounce 着

As I've mentioned in another thread, I am trying to learn Chinese without the use of a grammar guide or C-E dictionary. This is working pretty well so far, but I run into a little trouble with characters that have multiple readings.

着 is a real killer. It has (according to zhongwen.com) 5 readings and occurs more by itself than in compounds.

So what I would like is for someone to tell me how 着 is pronounced in each of the following sentences. For convenience, you can refer to the readings by typing a-f as follows:

a. zhu4, b. zhuo2, c. zhao2, d. zhao1, e. zhe2, f. other (please specify)

1. 他拿起一片面包吃，看着电视中的新闻报导员，他正在报导一个逃犯的消息。

2. “说他坏是废话。”维能姨丈哼了一声，瞪着在报纸顶部的罪犯说：“看他那副样子，十足的无业游民，你看他的头发！”

3. “慢着！”维能姨丈吼道。

4. “他们什么时候才能发现。”维能姨丈说着，紫色的拳头重重地打在桌子上，“那怎样处置这些该死的人？”

5. 哈利正想着楼上的扫帚维护箱，被这一句话惊醒过来。“玛各姨妈？”他脱口而出，“她不是来这儿吧？”

I myself write the word in different ways depending on the usage. For the pronunciation zhu4, I write 著. For other pronunciations, I write 着 (I cannot bring myself to write 著, which obviously has to do with how I was taught).

I had noticed that the character 著 appears once in the book I'm reading, in this sentence:

书跌到床上发出沉浊的碰击声，慢慢地滚过房间，哈利悄悄地跟著书，书落到他黑乎乎的桌子下面一角。

I thought it strange that one traditional character would be manifested as two simplified characters. Can anyone else confirm, is 着 always pronounced "zhe" while 著 takes on other pronunciations? How is it pronounced in the above sentence? Does 着 appear in traditional Chinese?

It is still pronounced zhe in the sentence of #6.

My chinese education was in traditional chinese and we use different characters for different usages. But it looks like that nowadays 著 is accepted for all the usages (especially in Taiwan it seems).

You can paste the two characters on the on-line Xinhua dictionary to get more information.

In the past, "著" is the formal form for this word, while "着" is the informal form. But now, "着" is the formal one and the only one in Simplified Chinese. "著" in Simplified Chinese means "authoring" and "works" only.

I am a native Chinese Speaker in China Mainland only, not very clear about the case in Traditional Chinese.

This is also how I (HKer who write in traditional Chinese) would use the two words, i.e. "著" for zhu4 (writing books, being famous, etc) and "着" for the others.

In Taiwan it seems that "著" is the standard form.

Yes, skylee is right. When I read this post, 著 is the only word I think of for all different pronunciations, though I do recognize 着.
