leosmith Posted July 19, 2007 at 02:41 AM Report Share Posted July 19, 2007 at 02:41 AM I'm going to China in 2 days, so I was thinking it might be a nice to have a free dictionary on my laptop. Does anyone know of one that I can use pinyin and english with?
cdn_in_bj Posted July 19, 2007 at 06:00 AM Report Share Posted July 19, 2007 at 06:00 AM I've been playing around with Pablo: http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/159-wuxia-aka-martial-art-or-kungfu-novels-by-louis-cha32
leosmith Posted July 19, 2007 at 06:14 PM Author Report Share Posted July 19, 2007 at 06:14 PM Pablo appears to be ideal for me, except I have to change my encoding to make it display properly (I'm using my computer for Japanese too). This involves rebooting to switch back and forth, which I'd rather not do. Any other suggestions?
madizi Posted July 19, 2007 at 07:48 PM Report Share Posted July 19, 2007 at 07:48 PM Try StarDict, it's almost the same as Kingsoft Powerword: http://stardict.sourceforge.net/
leosmith Posted July 19, 2007 at 08:51 PM Author Report Share Posted July 19, 2007 at 08:51 PM I was able to install StarDict, but it doesn't recognize the dictionaries I downloaded. Any suggestions?
Luobot Posted July 20, 2007 at 01:33 AM Report Share Posted July 20, 2007 at 01:33 AM Try ZDT Searchable database - Lookup entries by character, pinyin or english definition. ... Native CEDICT support and optional Adso support - The Cedict database contains approximately 27,000 entries. The Adso database contains more than 120,000 entries ... That's in addition to other useful features, including word lists, flashcards, and an annotator. It's open source and free, and supported on Windows, Linux and Mac. You can't go wrong. haton Posted August 19, 2007 at 08:07 AM Report Share Posted August 19, 2007 at 08:07 AM Some time ago, leosmith reported a bug with the PABLO dictionary, that failed to display characters properly if Windows was set to an Asian language by default. A new version of Pablo is out (v1.3), that seems to solve the problem. Users with a Japanese or Chinese system should be able to take advantage of Pablo ! http://ehaton.blogspot.com
leosmith Posted August 19, 2007 at 08:39 PM Author Report Share Posted August 19, 2007 at 08:39 PM Yes, it's working just fine now. This dictionary is great. Small, and very easy to use. Highly recommended. Thanks haton.
