hkl8324 Posted August 30, 2007 at 11:00 PM Report Share Posted August 30, 2007 at 11:00 PM 阿咩?(I can not hear this even I am a native speaking of Cantonese)話我把聲好好聽 阿咩?话我把声好好听 I think you mean 「咩」
Quest Posted August 31, 2007 at 02:18 PM Report Share Posted August 31, 2007 at 02:18 PM It's pronounced "me" as in "medical", not the pronoun "me". 咩 contraction of 乜嘢 = 什么东西
Myriam Posted August 31, 2007 at 04:13 PM Author Report Share Posted August 31, 2007 at 04:13 PM The dictionary I use doesn't have the files for the "mi" and "mit" sounds so I used the "min" sound instead : MinJam.mp3
文言訓開班 Posted August 31, 2007 at 10:51 PM Report Share Posted August 31, 2007 at 10:51 PM It sounds like 吖咩一话我....吖现好好听. 咩 is just /me1/, could be just the sound of "sheep bleeting" (chinese hanyu dictionary definition). in the above sentence, though, it's definitely 咩=乜野=什么

skylee Posted September 1, 2007 at 12:27 AM Report Share Posted September 1, 2007 at 12:27 AM This is what I've heard from the sound files - 1st sound file - 阿"咩音"話我把聲好好聽。 -> 阿"咩音" says my voice is very nice. 2nd sound file - 滅音 (mit yum) -> literally it means to extinguish the noise I guess Myriam is trying to transliterate the name "Myriam" to Cantonese. But both "咩音" and "滅音" are very odd if they are names. "美音" could be a good alternative. 美音.wav
CheukMo Posted September 1, 2007 at 12:40 AM Report Share Posted September 1, 2007 at 12:40 AM That's a very good transliteration for Myriam, sound wise, if that's what she's looking for. 卓武
Myriam Posted September 1, 2007 at 06:30 AM Author Report Share Posted September 1, 2007 at 06:30 AM 滅 is in 6th tone whereas 棉 ("Min" as in "MinJam.mp3")is in 4th tone. Only (intellectual) dishonesty (= mauvaise foi in French; dishonest and misleading conduct) could make a native Cantonese person supposedly mistake one for the other.
