"The Yunnan government has announced that beginning on January 1 of next year, Yunnan province will eliminate the current hukou registration system................

Beginning on New Year's Day 2008, the system of 'rural' and 'non-rural' hukou classification will be abolished throughout the province. Furthermore, applicants will be granted residential permits in their city of choice if they can provide proof of legal residence (such as an apartment lease) and if they can demonstrate that they have stable income......

Yunnan's hukou system shall be replaced by a new unified residential registration system known as yiyuanzhi (一元制), or "one-component system"...........

...their children will be able to attend school in Kunming......

Hukou system is related to so many other vital systems and fields like, education, public health care, housing, one-child policy, etc, which constitute the core of Hukou system. If only Hukou system changes, while other related vital systems remain the same as usual, the change itself is not so meaningful.

I personally think it's a good thing especially as it will be easier for children to get into school....

Take it as an example. Whether children can get into school more easily depends on whether the educational fee and the living cost are affordable, especially for rural children who want to study in urban schools.

Cheers!

This is very true but it helps a little bit as any children without their hukou in that city will at least have access to getting in to school, but whether they can get through the problems after that is another bigger problem.

I remember hearing about this on CCTV9 back in May. It was one of the things in the National People's Congress discussed then. There were quite a few provinces doing this as a test run. I remember that Liaoning, my locality, was one of the ones on the list. Don't know any details other than that.
