The first character means "to jump", the second one means "to dance", together they mean "to dance". Or you can think of it as "dancing". The second character on its own does mean "to dance", but it has other meanings too, like "wield" or "brandish". So it's better to use both, as there is no ambiguity and it is a proper word. The word "dance" (noun) is 舞蹈. The second character alone means "to tread". Together, though, they mean "dance".
