延烧 - for fire but also for other things?

延烧 can be used to mean a fire is spreading. I have also seen it used for contamination spreading. I am wondering if this is mainly a taiwanese use (journo is Taiwanese) or if this is widely used in China as well. If so, can it also be used for disease/epidemics etc? The dictionary only quoted the fire context.

It may be the taiwanese use, In China mainland the terms always be like 蔓延 which could used both for fire and disease.

eg. 经过消防员的不懈努力，终于控制住了火势的蔓延。

由于此种疾病的快速传播性，必须下大力度以控制疫情的蔓延之势。
