yi1 xia4 (not yi2 xia4): 一下

You can find a discussion about 一下(兒) here: http://www.chinese-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=2110 (Altair's explanation of it is the best one in my opinion)

gan4: 幹 (traditional)/干 (simplified)

wan3: 碗 (not technically the measure word for rice; it means "bowl," and you can use it to measure bowls of anything, i.e: 一碗飯 = a bowl of rice; 一碗湯 = a bowl of soup)

dun4: 頓 (traditional)/顿 (simplified)

lou2: i don't know of any word lou2 that means large... do you mean 樓 (traditional)/楼 (simplified), which means tower or large building?

You should check out http://www.zhongwen.com/ to look up characters. They have a very easy to use pinyin-to-character locator.

一下 yi2 xia4

There is a tonal change.

Ah... I was not aware of all the rules regarding tonal changes with 一... I finally found shibo's other post at http://www.chinese-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=1758 explaining it. Thanks!

Are there any other words besides 一 and 不 that exhibit this phenomenon?

yeah, that's it. i guess the i should have been more descriptive, the way i think we were taught (my books are packed away for this moving houses) was lou described a "large" building?

the dictionary i found it in said that it's a building of 2 or more stories, so i guessssssssssss that could be "large." :conf:conf
