Everest 藏語珠穆朗瑪（ཇོ་མོ་གླང་མ；藏文轉寫：Jo-mo glang-ma）就是「大地之母」的意思，稱作珠穆朗瑪峰。藏語「珠穆」（ཇོ་མོ；Jo-mo）是女神之意，「朗瑪」（གླང་མ；glang-ma）應該理解成母象（在藏語裡，「朗瑪」有兩種意思：高山柳和母象）。神話說聖母峰是長壽五天女（tshe-ring mched lnga）所居住的宮室。 喜馬拉雅 is just 音譯 of "Himalaya".
