Actually English should also undergo complication. Take rice and rice-related terms for instance:

飯 -- cooked rice

米 -- uncooked rice

粽 -- rice dumpling wrapped in leaves

稻 -- rice growing in field

禾 -- grain still on stalk

秧 -- rice seedling

All these single Chinese characters are equivalent to two or more English words. What a humbug!

IMHO, these English terms should all undergo complication.

...though there is a single word English equivalent for it: congee. Does anyone know how that term came about?

'Congee' is derived from the Indian (Hindi) word 'kanji', a similar preparation.
