Take rice and rice-related terms for instance: 飯 -- cooked rice 米 -- uncooked rice 粽 -- rice dumpling wrapped in leaves 稻 -- rice growing in field 禾 -- grain still on stalk 秧 -- rice seedling All these single Chinese characters are equivalent to two or more English words.
