roddy Posted May 14, 2010 at 07:33 AM Report Share Posted May 14, 2010 at 07:33 AM I think it'd be a decent idea to have regular polls of the membership here on various issues. Off the top of my head, what's your level of Chinese, what are your main study methods, are you a Simplified or Traditional user (did this one a few years back, can always do it again), Are you in China or not, so on and so forth. A lot of sites do this. Obviously users are able to post polls at any point themselves, but these would be selected for having a reasonable level of English, the questions and possible answers could be discussed in advance, and it would feature on the home page and hence hopefully get a bit more attention. Any thoughts?
Scoobyqueen Posted May 14, 2010 at 08:41 AM Report Share Posted May 14, 2010 at 08:41 AM Good idea. Hopefully, someone will analyse the data later when you have enough polls.
anonymoose Posted May 14, 2010 at 08:49 AM Report Share Posted May 14, 2010 at 08:49 AM We should have a poll on who should be vice-God of the board
Shi Tong Posted May 14, 2010 at 11:37 AM Report Share Posted May 14, 2010 at 11:37 AM sounds like a great idea!!
renzhe Posted May 14, 2010 at 12:27 PM Report Share Posted May 14, 2010 at 12:27 PM I suggest "Relative attractiveness of Chinese girls from different regions". OK, you can punish me now...
jbradfor Posted May 14, 2010 at 02:16 PM Report Share Posted May 14, 2010 at 02:16 PM Only if we have a "relative husband-material of Chinese boys from different regions" poll for the other half our audience  Back on topic, one poll I'd like to see is what textbooks people use at schools and what they think of it. Another poll is which language schools in China people have used and what they think of it.
Shi Tong Posted May 14, 2010 at 02:17 PM Report Share Posted May 14, 2010 at 02:17 PM hahaha *thread closed* sorry Renzhe, but you cant come out with generalisations as radical as this! I think we should also compare notes on the polls and try to give active help to those who are struggling to get to the next exam or level they're trying to achieve-- ex- I'm speaking level 4 or 5 according to what I listened to for the HSK Tingli Kaoshi, but I'm only level 2-3 for my reading and writing. I find this really annoying, so I'm wondering (apart from every day sitting down for a 200 word drill and learning 5-8 new words per day), what I can do to improve my level. There are probably lots of others like me who need this kind of advice. Hofmann Posted May 14, 2010 at 05:42 PM Report Share Posted May 14, 2010 at 05:42 PM Uhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm........ How about How annoyed are you at Chinese people right now? How many mistakes did your Chinese professor make today? How many wrong characters did you read today? Which is better: sniper rifles or shotguns? How old do you think Hofmann is? Do you find 的 irritating to write? Do you find 甚麼 and its variants irritating to write? What is the quality of your neighbors' dental hygiene? Do the Chinese people around you pretend to buy anecdotal evidence to avoid getting in trouble? Do the Chinese people around you pretend to confuse correlation with causation to avoid getting in trouble? Do the Chinese people around you pretend to be idiots to avoid getting in trouble? What is Hofmann's favorite color? Do you think you know what Traditional Chinese is? What would need to happen for the interface language of these discussion boards to switch to German and you to not complain about it? Should we have regular polls? Over which continent is the mothership? C a n y o u u n d e r s t a n d h o w i r r i t a t i n g i t i s t o w r i t e E n g l i s h l i k e t h i s ? What would need to happen for you to like writing English like that? Can I have an extension? Can I do anything for extra credit? How strongly is language tied to culture? How strongly is culture tied to people? What does it mean to you if I reject your language? What does it mean to you if I reject your culture? What was I doing again?
jbradfor Posted May 14, 2010 at 05:46 PM Report Share Posted May 14, 2010 at 05:46 PM How annoyed are you at Chinese people right now? How many mistakes did your Chinese professor make today? How many wrong characters did you read today? Hofmann, let me guess, your answer the first three questions are yes, many, lots?
Scoobyqueen Posted May 14, 2010 at 06:10 PM Report Share Posted May 14, 2010 at 06:10 PM how much do you spend on lessons is another suggestion
Meng Lelan Posted May 14, 2010 at 08:42 PM Report Share Posted May 14, 2010 at 08:42 PM Ah, Hofmann, you forgot a few questions. Like, how annoyed are you with frequent interface changes on Chinese Forums right now? How many times are you exhorted to post in English not Chinese in the Chinese Forums? Stuff like that. Shi Tong Posted May 14, 2010 at 11:03 PM Report Share Posted May 14, 2010 at 11:03 PM Hoffman, What about: How many good answers to questions do I have to give before someone will understand?
Altair Posted May 15, 2010 at 12:13 AM Report Share Posted May 15, 2010 at 12:13 AM Some of the polls I would be interested in would be: 1. Of relatively frequent visitors to this site, how many have a low, low-intermediate, intermediate, high-intermediate, or advanced/native level of skill in (a)speaking/listening to and (B) reading/writing Chinese? 2. Of relatively frequent Chinese learners visiting this site, how many study Chinese in a Chinese-speaking environment and how many do not? 3. Of relatively frequent Chinese learners visiting this site, how many study Chinese from teachers and how many study by themselves? 4. Of relatively frequent Chinese learners visiting this site, how many have studied foreign languages other than Chinese?
chrix Posted May 15, 2010 at 05:12 AM Report Share Posted May 15, 2010 at 05:12 AM So Altair, are you suggesting that only members with more than 500 posts can participate in those polls about "relatively frequent visitors" ?
Scoobyqueen Posted May 15, 2010 at 08:47 AM Report Share Posted May 15, 2010 at 08:47 AM Hoffmann - I liked your post. Original and creative.

OK, so just one more post and I qualify. Wait.. I qualify.. yay!! I think Altair has some interesting questions though, and I would warrant that it's open to whoever consideres themselves as relatively frequent visitor
