Mandarin Tone Shifts

Greatings, all!

I've been studying Chinese independantly for about 2 years now (books, tapes, CD-ROMs, etc.), and have run into a problem. While the texts will briefly touch on the subject on tone shifts, they only give a few clear examples, leaving it to the reader to get clarification from an instructor. Unfortunately, due to time/schedule constraints, I can't attend any classes, so this leaves me a bit in the dark. :wall

If anyone could provide good rules for when tones shift / are dropped, or at least point me in the right direction, I would deeply appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Edward
