liuzhou Posted December 6, 2004 at 12:31 AM Report Share Posted December 6, 2004 at 12:31 AM Sorry, I don't have a sample, but I can confirm that the Guilin dialect (桂柳话 GuiLiuHua) is similar to mandarin. It is considered to be a sub-section of 西南 South Western Mandarin. Among the more noticable differences are that tones are flatter (3rd tone hardly exists) and the soft /j/ becomes a hard /g/. There are vocabulary differences too. It cannot, however, be described as Guangxi dialect. Guangxi is linguistically very diverse. The Guiliu dialect is, as its name suggests confined to the Guilin and Liuzhou areas in the north. South Guangxi is quite different and many people speak Cantonese. There are also areas where minority languages are predominant. As a friend from Beihai said to me the other day, "I can understand 桂柳话, but cannot speak it correctly." More here. The song is somewhat more difficult to understand than actual conversational Guilin-hua, which as the above said is Southwest Mandarin. But there are some conversational phrases in the song as well (in parenthesis and the entire ending is a conversation between a guy and a girl) and it's a lot easier to understand. It's a long song, so you actually get to hear a lot.
