Unfamiliar grammar pattern

Can somebody explain this sentence and the type of grammatical structure it uses?

知识要靠阅读来积累。

I see it this way: 积累知识－》要靠阅读来积累知识－》知识要靠阅读来积累。

Question: is this sentence also right? :rolleyes: 哄住老婆－》要靠钱来哄住老婆－》老婆要靠钱来哄住

Edit: @googed: Moving the object to the beginning of the sentence is very common in Chinese for emphasizing。

I think neither. I think here 积累 has more of a meaning of "cumulatively", as in doing lots of.

So I would translate it as "[having] knowledge comes from cumulative [i.e. doing lots of] reading."

Think of it as if 是...的 has been left out.

知识要靠阅读来积累 = 知识 [是] 要靠 阅读 来 积累 [的]。

= Knowledge depends on reading to be accumulated

= The accumulation of knowledge requires reading

So I would translate it as "[having] knowledge comes from cumulative [i.e. doing lots of] reading."

Not quite - rezaf's understanding is correct.

"X 靠/需要 Y 来 verb" = X requires Y to be verbed. / X has to be verbed by (means of) Y.

e.g.

"这问题 需要 深思 来 解答" = This question requires deep thought to answer.

"知识 要靠 阅读 来 积累" = Knowledge has to be accumulated through reading.
