carlo Posted December 21, 2004 at 09:56 AM Report Share Posted December 21, 2004 at 09:56 AM Does anyone else on this list own a google gmail account? I cannot get it to display GB encoded Chinese properly. I run Win2000 (simplified Chinese) and Win Explorer. Any suggestions? Thanks! pazu Posted December 22, 2004 at 04:27 AM Report Share Posted December 22, 2004 at 04:27 AM I think Google has an FAQ related to this problem, I remembered they suggest you to download the mail in raw text format or what... you'd better check it out on their website. carlo Posted December 22, 2004 at 10:10 AM Author Report Share Posted December 22, 2004 at 10:10 AM What is weird is that I *am* running Chinese W, and almost all applications, including IE, are in Chinese. Yet Gmail displays 乱码 no matter what encoding I select. The Help window crashes everytime I open it. Sigh. I'll keep trying.
beirne Posted December 22, 2004 at 12:21 PM Report Share Posted December 22, 2004 at 12:21 PM If you want a basis for comparison to see if it can work try the Firefox browser (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/). You can get a Chinese version by following the Other Systems and Languages link. Gmail was originally optimized for Firefox so it may work better. It works for me everywhere but I'm using English Linux, XP, and W2K so the environment is a little different than yours. Also, if you have another email account you can use for comparison, send some Chinese email to it and your Gmail account in the same message and see if it works both places, just to rule out character encoding issues. You shouldn't need to download the mail in raw text format. I didn't have to do anything different at all to read email with Chinese in it on gmail. Thanks beirne, I can get around the problem quickly now by clicking on 'show original' in the 'options' menu. Now I only need to catch up with a pile of unanswered mail.... liuzhou Posted January 6, 2005 at 12:22 AM Report Share Posted January 6, 2005 at 12:22 AM The only way to get a GMAil account at present is to be 'invited'. If you PM me with your e-mail address, I can send you one.
