How to count the number of characters in a text?

Sorry if this has been discussed before. I have a vocabulary list in excel format and I want to know how many individual characters are in my list. Is there any way that I can do that?(I use a Macbook and I don't have windows)

I guess it's not the most convenient way to do it, but it should work on a mac.
