amory hill Posted January 19, 2005 at 10:40 PM Report Share Posted January 19, 2005 at 10:40 PM dzao everyone! my query is this: I know how to say I drive a bus or I'm a carpenter, but unfortunately it does not apply to me. if someone asks me what do I do, how do I tell them that I enjoy writing? for instance, my favorite on-line dictionary http://chinese.primezero.com/pzcdz/u.html gives 詩人 bard; poet; [ shī rén ] which is very well as far as that goes. but would: thanks for asking, wo-shi-ren make sense to the interlocutor? colloquially speaking, what would be the best reply? any help towards my stumbling efforts will be profoundly appreciated. yonglan Posted January 21, 2005 at 04:13 AM Report Share Posted January 21, 2005 at 04:13 AM I am a writer. 我是一個作家。 I was told by two of my teachers in Taiwan that such a statement is not at all 謙虛‧ They said that one should say 我是寫文章的‧ Your thoughts, skylee? skylee Posted January 21, 2005 at 04:58 AM Report Share Posted January 21, 2005 at 04:58 AM yonglan, I think you are excellent. And so were your two teachers in Taiwan. Not being humble is like a sin. And I think I should really stop answering posts as amory hill's on these forums.
