One example 他把学生当成自己的孩子 He treats his students like his own kids. But when I did a search I found out Dang zuo meant treat... as and cheng didn't bring up anything remotely close so can I use both interchangebly? Can I leave out dang? Why or why not? Glenn Posted July 6, 2012 at 01:36 PM Report Share Posted July 6, 2012 at 01:36 PM I had a similar example, but it uses 看 instead of 当. 那小女孩把長鬍子的老先生看成是她爺爺了。 My guess is that 成 is a resultative complement here (if I have my terminology correct). Also, in the there's an entry for 當成/当成 in the Taiwan MOE's dictionary that says 當作、認為 (当作、认为)。当 is read dàng in this case, in case you didn't know already. I can't speak to interchangeability.
