specialised term for 亂碼

Hello folks,

Is there any specialised term for 亂碼? I know it's often called gibberish but this word can also be used to mean something else.

Context would be important.  Gibberish is probably ok, 'garbage characters' might also be acceptable.

Because this phenomenon is uncommon in English (English only using the basic ASCII symbols), I don't think there's a word which would be understood by a non-programmer or non-foreign language speaker. The only specific term I know of is 'mojibake', but I doubt it would be widely understood.

I think it would be better to use 'corruption', which while not technically accurate, would be understood by anyone, or 'displayed incorrectly' which is vaguer than the original, but also understandable. For example, (half a sentence from wikipedia):

...导致紧接在后面的整个一行全部都是乱码

"...leading to the rest of the line immediately following being corrupted." or "...leading to the rest of the line immediately following being displayed incorrectly."

Thanks Imron and Fanglu.

I think corruption might be better in my case - I need to tell my project manager that the translation memory provided is 亂碼. : )

I will tell her the file is corrupted.

Yes, in this context, saying the file is corrupted is probably the best way to express this.
