I'm afraid I am not at all familiar with éste. I do know esté.

We write éste to distinguish between the demonstrative used with substantives and the one that replaces substantives. In English, we write them both the exact same way: "This car" and "I won't put up with this". In Spanish, there is an orthographic distinction.

 

In Chinese, there sort of is, and sort of isn't. At first I thought your struggle was about this aspect of the sentence. Later I understood that you were actually confused about why the noun wasn't being counted. Either way, knowing this may have helped with your confusion.

 

[这个]差距

vs.

[这]是差距
