Any schools similar to the middlebury program?

I live in the united states and I want to become fluent in chinese and I would like to become an interpretor and translator. I looked at the Middlebury and Falcon programs. Both look great, but are expensive. Are there any other intensive chinese language programs that are more affordable? Has any one completed the middlebury and falcon program. If you did what did you think of the program?

Have you started studying Chinese yet? If you truly want to be fluent in Chinese I highly recommend studying in China. However the typical classes that are offered by Chinese universities won't get you far on their own. You need to do a lot of outside studying and surround yourself with friends that are willing and eager to speak Chinese with you, preferably native speakers. The programs you mentioned are good and I have heard good things about them, but they can't match the environment that comes with studying in China. The other option is to first enroll in a solid Chinese program in the US and then apply for scholarships to support study in a program like IUP, which is truly the definitive experience for people seeking intensive language study. Unlike almost all other language programs in China IUP (and related programs in Taiwan) actually emphasize verbal interaction and have extremely high expectations of their students, but from what I hear and from what I have seen based on people I have met that have been through such programs the results are phenomenal.

 

I'm just curious, but what made you decide you want to pursue translation and interpretation?

You can search the forums by inputting Middlebury and Falcon. I did Middlebury for a summer and was not happy there at all. Studying in China or Taiwan is the better option I think.
