Embasio Posted March 22, 2015 at 10:30 AM Report Share Posted March 22, 2015 at 10:30 AM Hi everyone, I'm a new guest on this forum, what I met through the link of the Outlier Linguistic Solutions. It seems to me an excellent resource for those like me who love to share their experiences of study and I hope to find a good company! And sorry for my bad english right now! Anyway, my girlfriend is a student of oriental language and she introduced me to the Chinese language. it was love immediately. Now I found online the book "Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar", do you think it is a good book to begin? Where can I find other resources? Thanks for the help that you give me! Shelley Posted March 22, 2015 at 01:44 PM Report Share Posted March 22, 2015 at 01:44 PM Hello and welcome "Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar"(MMCG) is a good book but it can be a bit too technical for my liking, I prefer Schuam's Outline of Chinese Grammar it is written by one of the people who wrote MMCG but it is not so technical and it includes exercises to practice what you have learnt. MMCG has a separate workbook with exercises. I did a little review of the 2 books here http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/46180-intermediate-chinese-grammar-%E4%B8%AD%E7%BA%A7%E6%B1%89%E8%AF%AD%E8%AF%AD%E6%B3%95/page-5 post#84 Hope this helps

Shelley Posted March 22, 2015 at 09:34 PM Report Share Posted March 22, 2015 at 09:34 PM I took classes when I started, did some self study, took an evening class at university and now I am self studying again. Have a look around the various topics, forums and blogs. There is a topic about NPCR New Practical Chinese Reader, in fact I think there are more than one, this is a popular text book course. Try this to start with http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/5993-new-practical-chinese-reader-good-books/ I would recommend these books, workbooks, mp3s and videos, these are the ones I use, along with Schaum's outline chinese grammar. Tianjin42 Posted March 23, 2015 at 08:40 AM Report Share Posted March 23, 2015 at 08:40 AM Embasio, there was a book giveaway a few months ago through which I obtained a HSK grammar book to learn from. My review is posted here: http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/46337-review-of-practicing-hsk-grammar/ The book has actually grown on my as I have used it and I now consider it a really useful resource for Chinese grammar. etm001 Posted March 24, 2015 at 01:50 PM Report Share Posted March 24, 2015 at 01:50 PM I also recommend "Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar". It was the first grammar book I purchased, and overall I think it's explanations are clear and helpful. (Note: there is an accompanying workbook too). "Schuam's Outline of Chinese Grammar" is good too. Here are two grammar books which I have found very helpful: A Guide To Proper Usage of Spoken Chinese, ISBN 957-638-347-1 Common Chinese [Grammar] Patterns 330, ISBN 978-957-445-476-1 Both of these books are in traditional Chinese, but they may be available in simplified Chinese as well. Edit: I would not recommend "330 Patterns" to a beginning student. I think "A Guide to Proper..." would be suitable for a beginning student so long as they consult each grammar point in the book as they learn it (in other words, the book would be too difficult for a beginning student to read straight through).
